I made reference to Roger Bacon in the essay, a friar who laid down some of the basic concepts of modern science, to illustrate the point that the basic presupposition of modern science, that the natural world operates by forces and processes in accordance with laws that we can discover and exploit, points to Someone, i.e. God Who put that order there, a fact modern science doesn't like to acknowledge, because it brings up the moral question of the extent to which we have the right to exploit and control nature for our own purposes. With Sir Francis Bacon, of course, you have an outright apologist for the total conquest of nature.Gerry T. I have to conclude that traditional society ultimately cannot adopt a Baconian view of the sciences. In the Baconian view action is given priority over and above contemplation and ultimately any kind of metaphysics. Per Lasch I would have to agree that the idea of "progress" was born in the 18th century chiefly a product of Adam Smith. Smith's idea of an ever expanding market which would result in increased living standards that would ultimately come to encompass the globe has now been imported from the economic to the social realm and it acts to break down all distinctions of traditional societies.
