If the reasoning behind the question is that if Jesus was eternally the divine Son of God, Mary cannot be the Mother of God, this touches on the Nestorian controversy. The Church's answer to Nestorius, that the Virgin is indeed the θεοτόκος, is based upon the orthodox doctrine of the hypostatic union, that in the one person (ὑπόστασις) of Jesus Christ, the divine and human natures are united and that while the two natures are not mixed or confused, what can be predicated of either of them, can be predicated of the whole Person Jesus Christ. It would be wrong to say that Mary is the mother of Jesus' human nature rather than the mother of the Person Jesus, even though Jesus the Person existed before her. She is the mother of the Person Jesus, and since that Person is God, she is therefore the Mother of God. The Church was correct in giving her this title, and the orthodox doctrine of the hypostatic union is compromised when it is denied. It does not follow from this, that Mariolatry is justified. If Protestantism has had a tendency to slip, in its rejection of Mariolatry, into the heresy of Nestorianism - and it has - the Church of Rome has had a tendency to slip, in its rejection of Nestorianism, into idolatry in its veneration of the Blessed Virgin. Both errors should be avoided by the orthodox, Roman or Protestant.Gerry T.
